Thriller
My choice for genre is thriller. I love watching films such as Night Crawler or Alien, and feeling the suspense as it fills your insides. It creates a feeling that I only get watching certain films that I've always enjoyed. I am drawn to the genre due to the incredible camerawork and scenery that goes an incredible distance to create a mood for the film. It means that the movie doesn't hinge entirely on the skill of the talents, which is rather important when filming in a school of untrained students. I would like to emulate the way that Dan Gilroy creates incredibly suspenseful scenes through only observing potential danger. I want to create the feeling of helplessness that Hitchcock portrays in rear window, only being able to watch and not being able to help in any way. These feelings when created in film are some of my favorite parts of movies or TV, and is a large reason why I chose the thriller category. This clip from the original Alien creates an awful feeling of hopelessness as Dallas navigates tunnels guarded by a creature of unknown power. The stress builds throughout the scene as you start to feel like you are in the tunnel with Dallas through close up shots and long shots of darkness and fire. At the end, when Dallas is dead, you feel for the crew as they had lost their captain, introducing the first real feeling of dread that lasts through most the film.
